General Buying Tips
General Buyer Information:
- Wait until after your first class of each session to confirm with each professor what exact textbooks you need.
- There are no refunds/exchanges on books, so make sure you order and receive the correct texts before you buy.
- No cash sales – Visa/Mastercard/debit card transactions only.
- The first 2 weeks of the term are very busy for book buying. We are a very small operation (the actual ‘bookstore’ is two small closet sized rooms) so please have patience waiting in line – its just part of the experience. We will work to find your books and get you out as quickly and accurately as possible.
- How to buy books? Try this: go up to the 4th floor of FTX, look at the current list of law text books and prices on the wall outside the bookstore (it should be the same as the one posted on this site). Check the requirements from your course syllabus/notes from the prof, fill in the supplied book request slip, stand in line and chat with/make new friends. When your turn comes up, hand the friendly Bookstore employee (one of your fellow students) the book request slip, and they will fetch the books listed for you. Double check what is retrieved for you, and then pay with your credit or debit card. Carry your books away, study with them, become educated in law, do well at exams, enjoy your life of privilege and opportunity. Simple!
- You can help things go more smoothly by filling in the book request slip fully, making sure you know your bank/credit card PIN, and ensure that you have sufficient funds before buying – NSF rejections waste time and are kind of embarrassing with dozens of people standing around waiting (yes, it happens).
- Please fill out the book request slip completely, including course number, section, and the specific title/author of the book(s) you need. There are usually multiple sections for most courses (especially in 1Y) taught by different instructors with different text book preferences. Many text books have similar titles, so the more information you provide us, the quicker we can help you. Just writing or saying “1st year contracts text book” won’t cut it. It is your sole responsibility as buyer to ensure you have the correct textbook(s) for your particular course – if you buy the wrong book, you are stuck. Request slips will be available at the bookstore line up – bring a pen/pencil to fill it in.
- If you want to be a super-keener, you can save time by filling in your book request beforehand if you wish to do so. Download and print the Request Slip (PDF) here, then fill it out by hand. Make sure you consult the latest book list before hand, know what you need from your prof, and double check at time of purchase that you receive the correct books from us prior to swiping your card to make payment.
- Sometimes books are ordered late by instructors, or there are publisher delays and we cannot get some books in-stock until after the start of the term. Profs will try to adjust reading assignments when this happens. We will update the book list as soon as the books are available, so check with your prof and this website for updates periodically.
